Sorry For The Interruption

Wow! I can't believe it's been over 3 months since my last post.

Well, actually I can believe it...you see, I've been working a "real" job, with crazy hours

So I was either working or sleeping.  And sick.

Apparently I've been sick for close to a year, but I didn't know it, and it all came crashing down around my head on September 24.

I thought it was just a really bad case of heartburn, but continually got worse, and then when my heart started beating crazy, hubby took me to the ER.

After getting my heart regulated, I was admitted for observation, and a few blood tests.

Then an x-ray.

Then a CT scan.

Then an echo-cardiogram.

I was there for 5 days, and felt like Alice that fell down the hole.

Every day brought me a new doctor, and another diagnosis.

I have A-fib (which brought me to the hospital)

brought on by Type 2 Diabetes.

And while checking the x-ray a spot on my lung was discovered (hence the CT scan).

So they did a CT scan directed biopsy.

Which brings me to stage 1 lung cancer.

Yep, this non-smoker got lung cancer.  Go figure.

So now, I work when I can, while waiting for the results of the latest PET scan and for a surgery date.

All while learning all I can about diabetes.

The plus side to all of this?

1). God provided the right doctors at the right time to discover the lung cancer that otherwise would have become too severe before I noticed any symptoms.

2). I'm finally getting myself into shape with a better diet and exercise.

3). All my kids will be home for Thanksgiving...and I don't have to cook. lol

The moral of my story?

Life is short...enjoy it and spend time with those you love, and do the work you love.

YBC Book Review - "After The Boxes Are Unpacked" by Susan Miller

Have you ever moved?  Or have you ever felt alone and outside the circle?

I just finished Susan Miller's book, "After The Boxes Are Unpacked"

for Tyndale Publishing.

I requested this book because we are working at selling our house and then move back home to NY. (No, not New York City....there is a whole state that is much nicer than that city. lol)

I thought that this book would have more actual packing and moving tips, but it didn't.

It was about letting go of your past lives (and homes and communities) and learning how to fit in with the people in your new communities.  And how to learn to lean on God in the process.

Back in the early 80's, my ex-husband moved us from New York to Texas...and I was miserable.

I was a new Christian, just discovered I was pregnant with our 3rd child, and in an unhappy marriage.

I could have used this book.  It probably would not have saved my marriage, but it might have helped me to enjoy the communities where we lived.

This book is full of encouragement, and scriptures, and comment sense suggestions on how to remember your "old" life without too many tears, and how to start your "new" life in new surroundings and make new friends.  Even though I am moving back to my hometown, I will still be able to use the suggestions in this book, and we look for a new church, a home in a new area of town, and to help my kids find new friends.

After her last move across the country, Susan was led to start a support group in her church for newcomers.  Out of that came this book, and Susan has also started the Just Moved ministry, a non-profit organization to help everyone, weather you need a group, or would like to start one.

I give this book 2 thumbs up.

Scott's Marketplace

For many reasons I have chosen to close my shop at The CraftStar.  Which left me looking for a place to list my items, and in my search I've discovered

Scott's Marketplace.

It's a unique site, not because it's for handmade items only because it's not, but because it promotes local small businesses.  You can browse shop by location, so you can support your local economy.  

There is a vibrant handmade community at Scott's, so let's see what I can find....

I just love the bright colors of this statement necklace from Alice's Chic Boutique.  She even named it..."Lilly".

I love handcrafted soaps.  The prettier, the better.

And I love color...so this Pear Berry Soap by 

Belladonna's Soaps fills both those requirements.  And I bet it smells really good. too.

SACE 2015 Fall Show Sneak Peek #2

Only 2 weeks left till my favorite craft show of the year.

The Statesville Artian and Crafters Expo.

Let's see who else is going to be there....

I love journals...I have books stashed everywhere in my house.  No Evernote for me. lol.  Glenise shares her handcrafted journals created with vintage finds in her Etsy shop Stone Bridge Lane.  I can't wait to see these creations in person.  My favorite one in her shop is this Brave Girl Journal.

For the accessory lover, we will have Debra from Outtadabag. She creates bags of all shapes and sizes.  I really like this Chili Pepper Bag.

For those of you outside of the southern United States, and outside North Carolina....this is a corn hole board with the colors of the NC Tarheels.  After moving down here, I quickly learned that THIS is the team to cheer for, at least if I want my neighbors to talk to me. lol.  Susan from Design Crazy has these, and so much more to offer.  Painted glass.  Upcycled pieces.  And some AMAZING barn quilts.   

The artistic tool of choice for Robert and Billie is a scroll saw.  And they are very talented with that saw.  Check out the detail of Santa Clause on sleigh during his midnight flight.  They have a lot more to offer on Specialties Crafts.

Here's another great looking Santa, this one is from Flowerpot Friends.  Cheryl and her hubby just let their imaginations run wild with flower pots...so very cute.

YBC Book Review - Counting On A Cowboy by Debra Clopton

Y'all know I love to read, and I enjoy most every genre.  Even fictional romance.  And Debra Clopton's latest book in her Four of Hearts Ranch Romance series did not totally disappoint.

"Counting on a Cowboy" is sort of a continuation of the first book "Betting on Hope".  (You can read my review on that book here.)  

Counting on a Cowboy is about Bo Monahan, the middle brother on the Four of Hearts Ranch family.  Abby Knightly moves to the small town of Wishing Springs to hopefully start a new life after a great tragedy almost destroys her life.  In this book, you'll once again meet all the interesting characters that make up the town of Wishing Springs, and this time Debra has expanded on their lives also, so there is more to keep your attention.  I don't want to spoil the story so I'll leave it for you to discover yourself.  But I can tell you it follows the normal romance novel script...

girl is in crisis,

boy meets girl,

boy chases girl,

girl fall for boy,

then they both ride off into the sunset.

I do have to say that I will probably not read the 3rd book of this series, but mostly because I find romance novels too light reading.  It took me longer than normal to read this book, not because it wasn't good, but because it was predictable.  No cliff hangers.  No big drama.  Nothing that kept me up at night wondering what was coming next.  

With that being said, I still give this 4 stars, because while I may not read it again, doesn't mean that you won't like it.  My sister loved Harlequin Romance novels....she devoured them.  And I know that she would have totally enjoyed this book.

YBC Book Review - The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan

I finished reading "The Gracekeepers" by Kirsty Logan, but I have to tell you, this story is never really  finished for me.  I enjoyed it so much, the story just wrapped itself around my heart.  It is one of those stories that just lives inside you, evoking emotions and making it hard to put down.

The story is captivating and inspired in part by Scottish myths and fairy tales, but it could also be about our world. In Gracekeepers, there are two worlds, two peoples, those who live on land, and those who live on the oceans, with hints of those who may live in the oceans. Callendish lives on a small island, alone, overseeing funerals, when she meets North who works on a circus boat. And once their lives meet, their worlds change. You feel that their paths were destined to cross from even before their birth.  I don't want to spill the beans, but I do highly highly recommend this book for all those who love fantasy.

Kirsty Logan's writing style is ethereal, and misty, perfect for this story. You don't just read this book, you feel it. And when you're done...the story stays with you.  I was amazed when I discovered that this is her debut novel, she is truly a talented storyteller.  She has definitely become one of my favorite authors and I look forward to her next novel.  

I so enjoyed this book, I know I will be reading it again. And again.

I give this book 5+++ stars.

YBC Book Review - The Miracle In The Middle, Finding God's Voice In The Void by Carlotte Gambill

I've "discovered" another good book to help you get through the tough times.

"The Miracle In The Middle" by Charlotte Gambill

We have ALL had times in our lives when it feels like we are getting nowhere...fast.  When we first make that choice to follow Christ, we are all excited and ready to move out and do anything God asks us to do.  And God lets us know where to go and when because as babies, we need that moment by moment guidance.  But then the growing pains start.  All of a sudden the road looks long, and hard, and lonely.  And then you begin to doubt, and question, and whine.  Yes, whine.

But with lots of scripture and stories, Charlotte helps us to look around us, and in us, during these times in our lives, and to see that we are not as lost as we feel.

I turned my life over to God waaaaay back in 1982, and during the past 33 years, I have spent too much of my time lost and whining...all because I jumped ahead of God, or totally chose a detour from what He told me in the beginning.  So I had plenty of growing time, learning to trust my faith, my God, and myself.  And it's during these "God, why aren't you talking to me" times that our faith grows.

Charlotte is the pastor (with her husband Steve) of the Life Church in England, and has written this book with not just stories, but also with study helps at the end of each chapter.  I enjoyed this book, and will be keeping (or sharing) it.

"Where most beginnings start with energy and expectation for all that is ahead, and endings bring the joy of completion as you arrive at your desired destination, the middle is very different. YBC Book Review - "Miracles From Heaven" by Christy Wilson Beam

Do you believe in miracles?

I do, but if I didn't, this book

"Miracles From Heaven" by Christy Wilson Beam would make me think twice.

This is the incredible real-life story of a young girl with a big health problem, Pseudo-Obstruction Motility Disorder.  But Anna and her family were not about to let this disease define their lives.  I was encouraged by how this family depended on God and each other to get through every struggle and challenge put before them.  And this book would have been complete with just that story.

But God...

God had other plans for Anna's life.  And He used a big hollow tree and another crisis to bring about His plan.  Without giving away too much of the story, little Anna found herself in a difficult position, and it was during this time that she visited heaven.  And after her rescue, began the real story of her miracle, her healing.  I especially love how her parents, Christy and Kevin, didn't let this miracle take over their lives.  It would have been so easy for them to jump on the publicity bandwagon, but they didn't, they took their time before they even called Anna's improved health a healing, a miracle.

As you read this you'll also meet Anna's sisters and extended family.  What a wonderful bunch of believers.  Every one should have friends and family like that.

And the buzz is that T.D.Jakes will be making a movie from this story and will be released Spring of 2016.  So go now and get this book and read it.  You'll love it too.

YBC Book Review - The Marauders by Tom Cooper

I like to read, and I like music, and I love most genres (except horror...and rap).  So while most of my reading is faith based, I do enjoy trying new things,   That's why I picked "The Marauders" by Tom Cooper.  Boy, was that a mistake. :0(

Here's what I read about the book and why I ordered it...

"When the BP oil spill devastates the Gulf coast, those who made a living by shrimping find themselves in dire straits. For the oddballs and lowlifes who inhabit the sleepy, working class bayou town of Jeannette,  these desperate circumstances serve as the catalyst that pushes them to enact whatever risky schemes they can dream up to reverse their fortunes. At the center of it all is Gus Lindquist, a pill-addicted, one armed treasure hunter obsessed with finding the lost treasure of pirate Jean Lafitte. His quest brings him into contact with a wide array of memorable characters, ranging from a couple of small time criminal potheads prone to hysterical banter, to the smooth-talking Oil company middleman out to bamboozle his own mother, to some drug smuggling psychopath twins, to a young man estranged from his father since his mother died in Hurricane Katrina. As the story progresses, these characters find themselves on a collision course with each other, and as the tension and action ramp up, it becomes clear that not all of them will survive these events."

And what I got was....more cuss words and un-funny situations then you would find on an active navel vessel!  Seriously...it was that bad.  I was only able to get through the first four chapters, and still looking for anything even remotely funny.  Nothing.  And with EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER using toilet vocabulary in EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE....well, all I could do was close the book and move on to another one.  I tried several times to read this book, and I even skimmed through the middle and the end, but it was still the same...f*** this and f*** that...ugh.

While I am a faithful child of God, I am certainly not a prude, this book was just distasteful.  As a writer myself, I totally understand creating and filling out characters and settings and maybe needing a word or two for gritty effect, but the excessive use of this language was simply laziness on the part of Tom Cooper.  The story line may have gotten better, but the repeated use of simple cuss phrases took away any interest in the story.  I have spent time in Louisiana, and have meet kind and funny people, who had a better grasp on the use of the English language.  The people of Louisiana should be insulted to be portrayed this way!

And to close up this review, let me just say that while I usually keep or give away the books I receive for my reviews, this one I burned.  I don't have any enemies that I dislike enough to share this book with them. lol

Our Sunday Brunch - BBQ Hawaiian Bagels

Yesterday I made a quick and easy light meal for brunch.  I love quick, easy, and light.

You want to see it???

Take some bangles and toast them under the broiler.  I used plain bagels, but I'm sure any flavor would just add to the taste.

While the bagels were toasting, tear up some large leaf lettuce for your salad.  I prefer red leaf lettuce, but I only had green.  Really any lettuce will do.  Just an FYI, the large leaf lettuce is more nutritious that iceberg lettuce.  Wash, rinse, and spin dry.

Next up, some BBQ sauce.  I just use what ever flavor I have handy.  Then a pineapple ring, some smoked ham, and shaved cheese.  Then pop this back under the broiler.  While that's melting, I finished the salad with some tomatoes, carrots, and corn.  I like tortilla strips and hubby is partial to croutons.

Broil just enough to warm through and melt the cheese...and there you have it.

All the different flavors, from the bite of BBQ to the sweet pineapple to the smoked ham just all work together to tingle your tastebuds.

YBC Book Review - The Choosing by Rachelle Dekker

It's time for another Tyndale Blog Network book review and this time I chose a fiction,

"The Choosing" by Rachelle Dekker.

All I can say is

BRAVO!

I loved this book....suspense, faith, love, mystery, all rolled up into one great story.

Carrington is a young woman that has just become of age to marry, only no man chooses her.  So according to the law, she is sent away to work as a servant supporting the rest of society.  But it's a society that has sprung up after a great catastrophe has destroyed the life as we know it.  Now a select few men control every aspect of the peoples lives, according to how they interpret scripture.

In her new and unhappy life, Carrington meets up with a girl she knew from school, and this girl introduces Carrington to Aaron, the man who teaches people that they are worth loving, and the their Father loves them, despite what society tells them.  And she finds love.

Now throw in some murder, mystery, and loving emotions, and this becomes a book you won't want to put down, I didn't.  The best part?  There is a sequel coming out in Spring 2016.  Oh how I hate to wait. lol

Here's a little info about the author, Rachelle Dekker.  She is the daughter of best-selling author Ted Dekker.  And while her writing style is similar to her father's, she is an amazing talent all on her own, and I am sure that she will receive many awards during her career.

Faith Community Fest

This past Saturday I participated in a local festival, The Faith Community Fest.

The promoters did a great job setting this up, there was about 100 vendors, including food, direct marketers, and of course, HANDMADE!!  There was also live music and entertainment.  The weather was nice and didn't get too hot until it was time to pack up. lol

The only down part, there wasn't a lot of foot traffic.  :0(

But this did give me the chance to play around with my tent set up, and to meet new artists.

Look at the new set up.

I love my hot pink tent....so easy to see in a sea of white. lol  The only drawback was it was a little too pinky dark under the tent.  I'll have to look into maybe some pretty string lights and a small generator. And some longer table skirts.  Opps.  I thought I had purchased 2 flat grey sheets, but one of them turned out to be fitted.  Now there are pluses to both, so I'm thinking a flat sheet (for length) with a fitted sheet on top, what do you think?  The small table in the back was a last minute purchase, thus the plastic cover. 

I try to fit the items I offer to the type of show I'm at, the promoter sent out a list of vendors and I could see what else was being offered, so here I had less jewelry and more crochet.  In the basket were some children sized crowns and ninja masks.  And the new card holders were Hannah's idea.  Much easier than the slinky, and easier to carry and display the cards.  They didn't tip over or blow away.  The star blanket turned out to be a wonderful background!

Here's the small table, just the perfect size for these shelves.  I'm working on how to hang cloth from the back to hide where I keep my phone and drinks when I'm sitting back there.  hmmmm, any ideas?

You may recognize these shelves from my last show.  I love the shutter look, but they were just too big and bulky to cart around.  So I had Chuck cut them in half, and they worked out great.  I love the colors of light grey back with the pink/red shelves.  Now I plan to repaint the other shelves to match.  And I like the way the shelves set off the whole tent area as separate from everyone other booth around me.  I also want to get a small area rug, maybe a large welcome mat, to really draw people into the booth.

The Statesville Artisian and Crafters Expo 2015

This is a little late in posting, but a few weeks ago I attended my first craft show of the season.

The Statesville Artisian and Crafters Expo was held in our local mall.  While the show was ok, and the promoters worked hard, there was very little foot traffic.  I think that was because the mall is dying.  :0(  When we first moved down here, the mall was at full capacity, but now there are only a handful of shops there.  I heard that the owner of the mall is letting all the leases expire so they can tear it down and build a strip mall, but I don't see that happening.  That whole area of town is is shrinking.  Oh well, at least I made my booth rental and a little extra by the end of the looooong day.

This is Rena....she does thumbprint art, AND she had her 18 day old baby with her.  I was impressed.

My new blue shelves and the modge podged heads, you almost can't tell where the cat chewed one of the noses off. lol

How this for a business card holder? Thank You Pinterest. The only problem was that kids kept playing with the slinkys causing the cards to fall.

Now my next show in May is...

Faith Community Fest.  This one looks like a lot of fun.  I bet Hannah doesn't spend much time at our booth during this show. hahaha
